Japanese N/A (Maito),

(水中 雅章) Suichū Masaaki (Choreo)

A new transfer student that comes to Hibiki's school, whom is as quiet as he is mysterious. He is adept in sports and has become the center of attention in class. He's said to have changed schools from the very beginning and for some reason, he seems to have taken some interest in Hibiki.

Appearance

Maito

Maito is a fair skin young boy with dark purple hair and red eyes. He dons a long sleeve white, thin jacket and a blue shirt underneath. He wears navy blue leggings and blue tennis shoes. He sports a silver dog tag around his neck.

Choreo

Choreo is a male with silver hair and green eyes that are sometimes blocked by pink shades. His outfit consists of an aqua colored shirt and a matching indigo leather jacket and pants. He wears brown fingerless gloves and brown boots adorned with red straps.

Personality

Maito is a very quiet individual who keeps to himself amongst other things. Though he is gifted in many talents such as sports, book smarts, and even dance, his general demeanor makes it seem as though he is unimpressed or unenthusiastic about anything and sometimes leads others to believe he is emotionless. Despite this, he garners lots of attention in school just for being so calm and collected. His classmates describe his mysterious nature as "cool", even if he doesn't really agree.

Because of his outwardly disposition, Maito seems very distant and detached from others. His quiet demeanor quickly becomes cold as he tries to stay out of peer-related affairs. He fails to understand the reason behind "friendly" gestures or even the fact that his own classmates care do much about him despite purposely distancing himself. But through kind words and sheer determination from those peers, Maito seems to be moved by their unrequited affection for him.

For some strange reason, it appears that Maito is very in tune with his surroundings and is constantly aware of what's going on. He seems to know the Brave Beats' true identity but casually acts as if he were oblivious to this fact. Due to this, he tends to say very cryptic things to the main characters, and often leaves them wondering what he meant. As for the time being, he keeps an eye on them from a distance.

Maito has shown a very strong passion towards dancing. He especially shows this whenever Flash Beat appears in front of him and dances to save the day. He wishes to watch Flash grow and become a better dancer worth his while.

However, during the course of the story, Maito's (or and to some extent, Choreo's) cold and indifferent personality has been revealed to cover a more manipulative, calculating, sinister, and cynical side to him that has been festering since the death of his mother and the despair that Bunga Banga has subsequently made him feel. He firmly believes that dance can't save anyone, as it was the thing that ultimately damned his mother (as implied in the show).

After Maito is released from Bunga Banga's clutches, he has grown to be more expressive and affectionate at the end of the series, showing more emotion like most kids his age, while also showing a slightly more childish side (as shown in his habit of kicking open doors and coming late to dance practices). He also evidently sees Tank and Mink as parental figures, and gets embarrassed around them like Hibiki does to Fuuka and Tsuruo.

Story

Maito's Arc

Maito lived in an impoverished home alone with his mother. Their quarters were small and had very little but somehow they were able to live comfortably for the time being. Due to this, Maito had been moving from school to school for a long time. Unable to make friends or bond with other kids in these schools, Maito felt isolated from others and the only person he felt welcomed was his mother.

Be that as it may, his mother was frail and very ill. Being as poor as they were, receiving the proper medical care was out of the question. Even so, knowing her time may be short, his mother did everything in her power to keep Maito happy. She would dance for him and inspire him with her hopeful soul and will to live. This would be the "cure" for saving them. He would be greeted by a small Dancerian named Bunga Banga whom offered Maito a way to save his mother and for him to be happy. Enlisting in a contract with him, Bunga Banga would grant the boy the "power" to change his fate, only to realize this was a huge mistake that he could never return from.

Bunga Bange used Maito in his critical state of disrepair and would turn him into the dancing tyrant known as Choreo.

Choreo's Arc

All that was known of Choreo was that he was the previous King of Dance. He was later challenged by Yaharta and lost and soon met the same fate as Breakin, losing all of his powers and sent out of Danceworld.

Originally, Choreo was stuck trying to find a way to return to the dance world and promptly reclaim his right as king. However, he heard a rumor about a young dancerian challenging the current king and lost; Being sent to Earth and deprived of special spheres known as Dance Stones. Choreo thought of this as an opportunity to find and retrieve all of these stones so that he would be able to return to his powerful state.

Choreo would want his bitter revenge to spread even further than before and set his sights on collecting the stones. He would take on the form of a young boy named Maito Kamiya and enroll in protagonist Hibiki Kazaguruma's school. He did this simply to keep an eye on Hibiki as he already discovered he was the dancing hero Flash Beat. He waited for Hibiki to improve his dancing ability until just the right moment where it was full of hope. He would then crush that hope once he got close enough to his goal.

Choreo would eventually reveal himself to Hibiki that he was indeed Maito and would defeat him and his fellow Brave Beats and take away the collected stones.

Appearances

He first debutes as Choreo during episode 2, where he hacks into the security system of the museum upon detecting a dance stone inside the exhibits.

His persona as Maito, however, is only introduced during episode 5, where he is transferred into Hibiki and Kotone's school under the guise of a transfer student, and requests to be seated next to Hibiki.

After these two appearances, both Maito and Choreo are seen more in the series, with Maito being more of a minor character until snippets of his backstory is revealed. Choreo, on the other hand, is continued to be seen throughout the series, collecting the dance stones with the help of Mink and Tank, all while fighting against and helping the Brave Beats to eventually consume their hope. He is finally revealed to be Maito at episode 20, where he congratulates the Brave Beats for collecting all of the remaining dance stones.

Relationships

Maito's Mother

Maito is evidently shown to care, and appreciate her, being one of the people that brought him happiness despite their impoverished home with her dancing and their strong mother-son bond. After her death, he is seen to mourn and grieve over her deeply, further showing their close-knit relationship.

However, he is also very defensive and secretive about her (the anime doesn't elaborate why, but it is implied that he just doesn't want anyone else to know about her or that he is uncomfortable with letting people know more about himself, personaly), as evidenced when he gets mad after Hibiki reveals that he saw her in his memories when they were body swapped, and then starts to subsequently ignore and avoid him for a while after that in anger.

Hibiki Kazaguruma

As Maito's classmate and enemy (as Choreo), Maito is seen interacting with Hibiki quite a bit during school (and outside of school, as Choreo). Maito gains Hibiki's respect and envy, while he, in turn, finds Hibiki an interesting person full of hope, deeming him worthy to be used in his plans to take back the throne from the current dance king, Yaharta.

It is also explicitly shown in the anime that he views Hibiki as his light, and it is implied that he may want Hibiki to save him from the despair he is feeling or just emphasizing how hopeful and bright he is while dancing. At first, he only sees Hibiki as a useful tool under the control of Bunga Banga, but after being freed, he comes to view Hibiki as a close friend, and agrees to go to their dance practices together during middle school.

Kotone Amamiya & Charlie Tsubasa Kaneyama

Like with Hibiki, he and Kotone are classmates, and is frequently seen interacting with her in classes and extracurricular trips (like with the ninja town trip and more). However, he reveals that to him, she is also just a pawn in his plans to reclaim the dance king throne with her hope. At the ending of the series, however, he is seen to considerably warm up to her just like with Hibiki.

With Tsubasa, on the other hand, Maito is rarely seen interacting with Tsubasa in and outside of school (except when they're clashing as Air Beat and Choreo, of course), but it is implied that Maito views Tsubasa as a pawn and then eventually warms up to him just like he does with the rest of the Brave Beats.

Bunga Banga

Most of his relationship with Bunga Banga isn't elaborated on in the series, only showing the viewer that Bunga Banga only views Maito as a 'useful vessel' with how much hope he had due to his relationship with his mother, and proceeds to sabotage their life and take over Maito's body and soul to take the throne of the Dance King. Bunga Banga doesn't have any hesitation with manipulating Maito, and it is implied that it also has some kind of control over his body as well.

Miki, Aya, and Madoka

Maito doesn't seem to mind their incessant fawning over his abilities and cold personality, and is shown to be indifferent to their cheers of support and how defensive they can sometimes get over him. Later in the series, it is revealed that he is confused as to why they are so attatched and affectionate to him, and also disregards their safety when he threatens their lives just to get the Brave Beats to transform. During the epilogue, he is now shown to be flustered with their advances, and is weak to their insisting and jovial actions that end up with him getting roped into their dance club activities.

Abilities

Hacking

During his first appearance, he is shown to be at least somewhat adept with hacking, being able to shut down the security of a museum with just a computer to get Mink and Tank inside to retrive the stone.

Dance Stone Detection

Like Breakin and Adeline, he is also particularly sensitive to the power that dance stones give off, using this to his advantage to track them down and take them for himself (usually making Mink and Tank do the heavylifting).

Dancing

Both as Choreo and Maito, he is shown to be particularly adept at dancing, being able to defeat the Brave Beats despite their dance souls being pretty powerful too. Maito, on the other hand, is able to perform dances with ease (to the point that there would be a group of people crowding around him just to see in episode 6).

Transformation

Like the Brave Beats, he is able to use Bunga Banga's connection and power to transform himself into Choreo, subsequently altering his physical appearance to be able to dance easier.

Trivia

  • Maito's name literally means "dancing person". His surname means "god valley".
  • Choreo's name is short for "Choreography".
